Best Nursing Homes Award

For the second consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has included Shelby in its recently released list of Best Nursing Homes. This designation, achieved by fewer than 13% of nursing homes, is only given to those facilities that demonstrate consistent performance in national quality measures over a year.

As with the ratings assigned by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS, the U.S News rating is based upon performance in three areas: state-conducted health inspections, nurse staffing and medical quality measures. However, the more rigorous U.S. News assessment averages monthly data over a year and places more emphasis on strong performance in medical quality measures by capping overall ratings for homes with low performance in this area. It’s approach also calls attention to homes that “deliver only the bare minimum of rehabilitation therapy to most of the residents who receive high levels of rehabilitative services.”

A Trusted Authority

  • Best Nursing Homes ratings incorporate more data about medical quality, rehabilitation therapy, and performance over time than many other hospital and medical rankings.
  • Approximately only one out of eight facilities achieved “Best” status by earning an overall U.S. News ratings of at least 4.5.
  • U.S. News’ “Best” designations are widely recognized by both consumers and medical professionals as the “gold standard” for quality healthcare in the U.S.

CMS Five-Star Rating

Shelby is a recipient of the Five-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS. Created to help patients, their families and caregivers compare nursing homes, this system assigns an overall rating of one to five stars based on performance in three areas: state-conducted health inspections, nurse staffing and medical quality measures.

In addition to individual ratings in each of the three performance categories, each facility is assigned an overall rating. The quality delivered by nursing homes with an overall Five-Star rating is very much above average.

To determine if a facility meets Medicaid and Medicare minimum quality requirements, trained inspectors following specific processes and assign Health Inspection Ratings based upon the last 3 years of onsite inspections, including both standard surveys and complaints.

Considering the individual level of care required by each resident, the Nurse Staffing Rating looks at the average daily hours of care provided to each. Facilities where residents have more severe needs, would be expected to have more nursing staff.

The Quality Measure Rating encompasses eleven different physical and clinical measures based upon information collected by the nursing home. The Quality Measures provide information about how well a facility is caring for the residents’ physical and clinical needs.
